42goals.com Moves to New Hosting Company

We are pleased to announce that as of Apr 16, 2012, 42goals is hosted by @Softlayer  (www.softlayer.com).  We are hosted in their Washington, DC data center.  We also upgraded our servers so hopefully you’ll notice the improvements!  The new server also allows us to quickly scale up without any down time (in theory!).

42goals Suffers Approx 2 Hour Outage

                                                                              Sunday, April 15th

Due to DNS problems, 42goals.com suffered a short outage of approximately 2 hours on April 15 between approximately 0700hrs and 0900hrs GMT.  42goals.com was planning to migrate to a new server & provider sometime later in April; the announcement was to be made later this month.  Unfortunately, due to some unfortunate DNS errors during the preparation of the migration, it was much easier to commit immediately to migrate the server & provider than to roll-back existing DNS errors.

Our apologies for the inconvenience caused.  The website will continue to be monitored.

gabigfoot asked: 1. Can you tell me how the name 42goals came about? I'm just curious.

2. I'm interested in the corporate version if a few changes can be made

a) Can the percentages be expressed as percentages instead of decimals?
For example "80%" instead of ".8"
This should be simple but it makes things far easier for the average person by eliminating the need to mentally covert .8 into 80%.

3. Can you total everything as a global percentage for all goals in a set for a defined time period?
For example, instead of only having 30% of goal A, 70% of goal B and 80% of goal C cumulative for the week, there would be an additional column which simply says "avg. of all goals for the week = 60%"

Good questions and comments:

1.  Ahhhhh, hmmmm, I think I will keep that a secret for now :-)  Any guesses?

2 & 3.  Will add that to the list of new functionality to add.   We are trying to gather comments from others concerning additional functionality so if you have other ideas, would be pleased to hear from you.

jaywink asked: Hey, any chance of getting an export feature? I'd like to export my logged in values to do additional calculations.

Thanks for the request.  We are planning some new features and would certainly like to hear from everyone what they would like to see.  I ran through twiitter, facebook, satisfaction, etc and see these:

1.  Export and import functionality of goals

2. move goals to different tabs without having to recreate the goal

3. define the start day of the week.

Above is in no particular order though.  We would like to hear from anyone else who has some suggestions.  We will try to announce our roadmap then for the next few months back to you!

Send a Message of Hope to Japan with Ganbatte365

Today is the first anniversary of the devastating March 11th earthquake in Japan. Although progress has been made, for some it may take decades to return to any sense of normality.

Express your support with Goals42.com one year later by sending words & messages of support.  Ganbatte365, which is a non profit organization (NPO), makes it possible for you to do exactly that!  Manny messages that are received are displayed across digital signage throughout Japan.

To have your message displayed to thousands of people in Japan, simply:

1) Tweet a message of support with the #kizuna or #G365 hash tags and your country name in square brackets,

or

2) Go to the Ganbatte 365 Facebook page and leave a message (again, mentioning the country you are writing from),

or

3) Email a message directly to kizuna@ganbatte365.jp

Please also have a look at some of the many Ganbatte365 videos documenting the recovery process in Tohoku at www.ganbatte365.jp/en or on the Ganbatte 365 YouTube Channel – all free for download and reproduction.

42goals acquired

Hi everyone!

I am excited to announce you that 42goals has been acquired by Richard S, a VC and entrepreneur from Tokyo, who has a particular interest in webdev and technology.

What does it mean for 42goals users? The project will run as usually, it will be just a new team of developers who will stay behind the curtains maintaining the service. Richard has clear plans to add new features and functionality long awaited since the last update.

I would like to thank all of you for it was really fun to run this project. In any case, I am not saying goodbye. I will be maintaining the project for until the new team gets over it and make sure the transition goes smoothly. Also, I am an active user of 42goals and you can follow me on my personal page checking how my PhD thesis goes ;)

Thanks again for supporting 42goals, me, and the new team.

- Alex Pak, founder of 42goals

We go social!

At last, we have just released a big and an important update. We have implemented a feature that was missing from the beginning but which is essential for goals achievement — social functions. Now, you can get a help from your friends or members of the 42goals community to motivate you. Let’s start digging into the new features!

Public profile

The first feature is a public profile. This is an exhibition page of your achievements. You can put here charts depicting your current progress on the goals you have set. Here is my page:

Reduced amount of caffeine consumption? Lost couple of pounds? Send a link of to your friends and impress them with your progress. Your public page is easily customizable. You can modify your charts and change the parameters you want.

For now, you can set up to 3 charts, but we will change that soon. You will be able to add more charts as well as to change the whole layout.

Let your friends to help you stay motivated

You public page has three tabs. The first one “Profile” is pointing to your charts. In the second one “Goals”, you can share your goals. To make them public click on edit icon

And voilà! Your friends now can see your goals and will help you to stay motivated.

Share your experience

The third tab “Posts” is where you can share your experience with your friends and the community. You made a progress this week? Write a small post, maybe it will be useful for your friends and might also help you to stay focused.

Signing in with Twitter and Facebook

Everyone now has an account at Twitter or/and Facebook (tell me who doesn’t?). But not everyone has an account at 42goals (at least not yet). To make it possible for your friends to cheer you on 42goals, we added sign in support for Twitter and Facebook users. With a single click they will become members of the community without any need to fill registration forms.

Well, actually two clicks:

We promise not to post anything on your wall without your permission, we just need some basic info perform the authorization process.

Updated charts

We have updates the visualization library, so the charts have a cleaner look.

While these were mostly cosmetic changes, we are preparing something cool in a next release (does a word “correlation” tells you anything? *wink*)

Bug fixes and etc.

  • Fixed sorting goals
  • Fixed wrong counting of monthly values
  • Fixed wrong data aggregation when building charts
  • Performance enhancements

New team member!

Our new team member joined us to help developing 42goals. She definitely keeps us motivated!Meet her here: http://42goals.com/about/

Coming up next

We haven’t pushed all the new features yet. Some of them are still in development, others are waiting until we obtain some critical mass of public profiles. So, you should create one ASAP!As usually, we need your feedback. Tell us what you think about the new features and what would you like to see next?

From our secret devlab

So, if you have figured out from the previous post, we are adding some social interaction for 42goals users. First, it comes with creating your own profile page, where you can put cool charts depicting the progress of your achievements.

There will be a tab with goals you want to share (you will choose which goals should be public and which ones should remain private):

We are also changing the chart constructor, trying to make it more pleasant looking and informative at the same time. We have added some new types of charts, like “area”:

While we are still working on new features, we would like to get a feedback from you. What would you like to put in your profile? What tools do you need to share your progress?
